The topic is supposed to be foreign policy, and he'll do ok. He is trying to fanagle the schedule so that the VP debate ends up not happening. Also, on multitasking, yeah, if I am stupid enough to buy that his reasons for this stunt are sincere, then wouldn't I need to wonder how someone who can't walk and chew gum at the same time will handle the Presidency? John McCain is not trying to avoid the debate itself. He is just trying to separate/distinguish himself from Obama by claiming he is more concerned with on the ground issues. This is his opportunity to present himself as a leader, and he is running with it. It doesn't matter that he is not one of the decision makers, or that he really can not help resolve any issues. All he has to do is give the 'appearance' of being a leader, so that the public can feel more secure in electing him.
